La Venexiana (play)
''La Venexiana'' ("The Venetian Girl") is an anonymous Italian comedy in five acts from 1535-1537.〔John Gassner, Edward Quinn ''The Reader's Encyclopedia of World Drama'' 2002 p.895 "B. W. Venexiana. La (The Venexiana. first half of sixteenth century). An anonymous Italian comedy. The protagonist is Julio. a youth who. newly arrived in Venice. falls in love with a young married woman. .. Discovered by E. Lovarini in a Venetian codex and published in I928. La Venexiana has been attributed to the learned and lettered Girolamo Fracastoro of Verona (I478-I553). but this attribution is far from proved"〕 The comedy plays on the dialects of Tuscany, Venice and Bergamo.〔Hermann W. Haller ''The Other Italy: The Literary Canon in Dialect'' 1999 p.135 "The new vertical plurilingualism is fully at work in the anonymous five-act ... and genuine early theatrical jewel La venexiana on the passion of love, composed between 1535 and 1537. In this lustful and voyeuristic bourgeois play Tuscan is assigned to Julio, the educated young foreigner who praises the beauty ..the widow Anzòla and the young Valiera, both successful in their seductive strategies, speak Venetian, as do their maids, with Bergamasque used by the facchino."〕 It was adapted to film under the same name as an erotic comedy in 1986.
